Weather this morning is gorgeous… sunny, little wind with temperatures around 10 degrees… construction on the new university building is progressing… the clear waters of Seto Inland Sea, can’t wait for the water temperature to rise up to 20 degrees, then it is skin diving time…
4月3日は私と妻にとって特別な日です。まず、それは私たちの第38回の結婚記念日です。次に、1987年4月3日は私が国費留学生として伊丹国際空港に到着した日です。私の日本での多くの冒険が始まった日でした。今日の日は、点心とワインで祝います。
April 3rd, today… stands out as a conspicous day for me and my wife. Firstly, it is our 38th wedding anniversary day. Secondly, April 3rd 1987 was the day I landed in Itami International Airport as a government scholarship student, thus kicking off my many adventures in Japan. We are delighted to celebrate this day with dimsum and wine.

2024年4月1日、月曜日。なんて日だろう。新しいページの始まり… 新しい、真っ白なページ。
そう、これから何を描こうかな。何はともあれ、旅を楽しみたいと思います。
第一に、私は約15か月間ヘルニアに苦しんでいます。痛みは耐え難いものになる場合があります。数メートル歩くのもやっとな時もあります。これを、確実にリハビリしていきます。自重トレーニング…いくつか例を挙げると、モンキーハング、プルアップ、腕立て伏せ、スクワット、ブリッジ、プランクなどです。コアの筋肉を強化しなければなりません。
その間、「主夫としての正当な役割を取り戻す」つもりです。私の「Sweeeto haato」は何十年もお世話になっています。もっと頻繁に皿を洗い、より頻繁に家の掃除をし、より頻繁に食料品の買い物をし、そしてもちろん、より頻繁に料理（屋外）をするつもりです。休眠中の２台のダッチオーブンを有効活用する。
次に、野菜、果物、ハーブ、花のガーデニング。わお～、ワクワクします… ガーデニングはおそらく、これまでで最も充実した趣味の 1 つです。それは「楽園」であり、土に触れること、母なる地球をありのままに、飾り気のないままにできることです。母なる地球にどんな作物を与えられても、それは幸せなボーナスです。
もちろん尺八です。私はこの楽器をとても愛するようになりました。それなしでは生きていけないぐらい、好き。また、ウクレレとキーボードを独学で学ぶために何度も挑戦するつもりです。ことわざにもあるように、決して諦めないのです。
スキンダイビング、スキューバダイビング、水中写真…ダイビングの感覚を表す言葉は「天国」です。海水温が暖かくなるのが待ち遠しいです。これに関連して、海洋生物や環境に関する写真展や講演会を継続的に実施します。
環境といえば、同じ志を持った友人たちと協力して環境保護に取り組むのはとても楽しいことです。その点では私は恵まれています。3 人の素晴らしい人物と出会うことができて幸運です。会社員の溝渕誠さん。元市役所職員で現在は社会福祉協議会職員の中西省吾氏。丸山輝裕氏はフェアトレードNGOに所属している。私たちは一緒に自分たちを「LOVEチーム」、正式には「庵治なビーチクリーン実行委員会」と呼んでいます。2020年から一緒に活動をしてきましたが、とても楽しいです。
2024年4月1日、月曜日… このエピソードを書く数日前に、マニラ在住、親愛なる友人が、若い頃に大好きだったバンドのひとつ、ディープ・パープルのことを思い出させてくれました。私は今、アルバム『Made in Japan』を聴きながら、「Sweet child in time…you’ll see the light」を歌っていることに気づきました…
さあ、絵を描き始める時間です…
April 1st, 2024, Monday. What a day. The start of a new page… a new, blank white page.
Yes, what am I going to draw from now on, I wonder. Whatever it is, I intend to enjoy the journey.
First and foremost, I have been suffering from hernia for about 15 months now. The pain can be excruciating. At times, I can hardly walk a few metres. This, I am going to rehabilitate for sure. Calisthenics… monkey hangs, pull ups, push ups, squats, bridges, plank… to name a few. Got to strengthen those core muscles.
Meanwhile, I intend to ‘reclaim my rightful role as house husband’. My ‘sweet-haaato’ has been taking good care of me for decades. I shall be washing dishes more often, cleaning the house more often, grocery-shopping more ofter, and of course, cooking (outdoors) more often. The two dormant dutch ovens shall be put into active use.
Then, gardening for vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers. Woohoo, exciting… Gardening is probably one of the most satisfying and fulfilling hobbies one can ever have. It is ‘paradise’, to be able to touch base with the soil, to be with mother earth as she is, raw and non-pretentious. Whatever fruits she grants me, is a happy bonus.
Shakuhachi, of course. I have grown to love this instrument so dearly. Can’t live without it. In the meantime, I shall be trying for the umpteenth time, to teach myself the ukulele, and the keyboard. Never give up, as the saying goes.
Skin diving, scuba diving, and underwater photography… A word to describe the feeling of being underwater is: ‘heavenly’. I can’t wait for the sea water temperature to warm up. And in connection to this, to continue conducting photo exhibitions and talks on marine life and the environment.
Talking of the environment, it is such a thrill to be coordinating and working with like minded friends on the protection of the environment. I am blessed in that, I was lucky to be able to hook up with three amazing individuals: Makoto Mizobuchi, a company man; Shogo Nakanishi, a former employee of the city office and now heading a welfare-related entity; and Teruhiro Maruyama, who is associated with an NGO on fair trade. Together, we call ourselves the LOVE Team, or officially, Aji-na Beach Clean Committee. We have been working together since 2020, and thus far, it has been such a joy.
April 1st, 2024, Monday… Some days before penning this episode, a dear friend from Manila reminded me of one of my favorite bands in my youth, Deep Purple. I now found myself listening to the album, Made in Japan… and singing along ‘Sweet child in time… you’ll see the light’…

今日が私の香川大学勤務の最後の日となります。
この 2、3 日は、香川大学で 28 年間にわたって蓄積されたものの山を片付けるのに費やしました。
私のキャリアのハイライトは、間違いなく、インタナショナルオフィスひとつの部門である留学生センターのセンター長としての長い勤務です。
留学生の世話に加えて、仕事の大部分は、海外のパートナーとの調整や交流が含まれていました。
これらの経験は、これからもずっと私の中に残るでしょう。
もう一度、私の指導者、同僚、学生、友人、家族、そして何らかの形で私を助けてくれたすべての人に心から感謝します。桜が咲き始めました。さあ、新しいアドベンチャー、出発します～
Today marks the final day of my academic career at Kagawa University.
Spent the last 2, 3 days clearing up the mountain of stuff accumulated over 28 years at KU.
The highlight of my career is without doubt, my long stint as Director of International Student Center, a division under the International Office.
Besides taking care of international students, a large chunk of my tasks included coordination and interactions with overseas partners.
These experiences will remain with me for a long time to come.
Once again, my hearfelt thanks to all my mentors, colleagues, students, friends, family, and everyone who helped me in one way or another.
The sakuras have started blooming. A new adventure awaits…
本日、最終講義を無事に実施しました。会場と国内外のオンライン参加者は100人ぐらいでしたでしょうか。広島大学・名古屋大学・香川大学の恩師の先生方、香川大学の先生方、学内外の同僚の皆さん、学生の皆さん、地域の皆さん、ご参加、本当にありがとうございました。とても光栄で、これ以外、何もいらないぐらい、幸せでした。
Today, managed to deliver my final lecture. A total of about 100 on-site and (local and overseas) online participants took part in the lecture. Among the participants were my mentors and teachers from Hiroshima University, Nagoya University, and Kagawa University. In addition, colleagues and former colleagues from Kagawa University and other univerities, students, members of the local community, and friends (near and far) also came by. It was such an honor and a good feeling to have so many people coming. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
本日、香川大学職員永年勤続者表彰及び名誉教授称号授与式等に出席させて頂きました。
1996年から、28年間、香川大学で教員として仕事ができたのは、実に光栄なことでございます。
たくさんの方々に助けられて、本当に感謝の気持ちがいっぱいです。
今後とも、名誉教授として、香川大学や地域に貢献できること、精一杯、楽しくやらせて頂きたいと思います。
Today, attended the ceremony for appreciation of life work at Kagawa University,and the conferment of Professor Emeritus.
It has been a big honor for me to be able to work 28 years (since 1996) for Kagawa University as a faculty member.
Along the way, many people have assisted me and I am full of gratitude to them.
From now on, as Professor Emeritus, I plan to continue enjoying and contributing to Kagawa University and the local community.

Winter is the time to prepare wood for the next year’s use. Thankfully, for the past few years, we have a neighbor who has been offering to give us wood from their forest. This time, they gave us a full truck load of wood… lucky!!😄
