Gorgeous day in October 2022

Such gorgeous weather today… air temperature was between 14 to 20 degrees… little wind, low humidity, and sunny…
Beautiful beautiful day to be in the garden…
Made another chicken house, this time, a movable one…
The potager is doing so well… lettuce, turnips, brocolli, fava beans, snap peas, spinach all growing well…

Chicken house: 90% parts assembled, birds move in…

Yes, had already assembled about 90% of the parts of the chicken house…
The three chickens have moved in, and are enjoying their new ‘hotel’…

The side roof, made from bamboo…

The other side of the the side roof…
Look at the bottom part of the house… all these parts are removable…
View of the iron netting at the bottom, for the birds to drop their poop…
Fixed the horizontal bar for the birds to rest at night…
View of the chicken house, with the house of the master in the background…
Another view of the chicken house…
Provided a large box, just for the chickens to lay their eggs…
Can you see the construction of the side roof and the top roof?

Re-used the two glass windows (that I kept from our house renovation years ago) to fix the bottom part (below the roof)… the chickens can view the outside scenery when they are bored…

Chicken house roof: bamboo heat treatment

Am embarking on an exciting experiment, to use bamboo material for roofing for the chicken house…
Two lengths: the short (70 cm) for the side roof, and the long (160 cm) for the top roof…
But bamboo is susceptible to Powderpost beetles, which in time, will eat away the bamboo…
The heat process apparently, will give the bamboo an awful taste for the beetles…
At the same time, the heat extracts oil from the bamboo… and the oil, in turn, will act as a protective layer for the bamboo…

The short (70 cm) bamboo, all cut up nicely…

The heat process begins…
The bamboo changes color, and oil oozes out…
Using a rag to evenly spread the oil all over the bamboo…
The bunch of short bamboo after heat treatment…
Splitting the bamboo into halves…
Removing the nodes…
Next, the long bamboo undergoes heat treatment… see the bunch of long bamboo in the background?
Splitting the long bamboo into halves…
Removing the nodes…

Next step, assembling the parts…

Chicken house: the foundation

Been keeping chickens for several years now…
Made a mini chicken coop years ago with recycled wood…
Design was not too good as too much effort was needed to clear the droppings…
Hence, Version 2.0 of the chicken coop…
Below are some shots of the Ver. 2.0 coop foundation, taken from different angles…

The design plan is all in the head… nothing was drawn out on paper…

Made it a point to make the parts ‘removable’ so as to facilitate cleaning…

Even the nails used are recycled…

This structure is only for the chickens to sleep in, that is, their hotel room…
